Malia Hatico-Byrne

Malia (she/they) is a movement and community-based artist in Huchiun, which is unceded Lisjan Ohlone land (Oakland, California). Her practice is centered around ancestral lineage, body reclamation, collaboration, and storytelling. Malia has worked with Skywatchers/ABD Productions, an enduring community-based program and performance art ensemble based in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood, since 2017. Rooted in the belief that relationship is the first site of social change, Skywatchers uses a values-based methodology focused on process over product to leverage performance for justice and equity. Malia became an associate artistic director of Skywatchers in 2020.
