Providers, especially hospitals, are often in a position to not only heal patients clinically but also connect them with ways to address social needs that impact their health, too, such as transportation, food, housing, or utilities. Most hospitals are now screening patients for these non-medical needs, but not every hospital is equally likely to have the community partnerships needed to address them. Recently published in JAMA Network Open, an AAMC study found that these screenings and partnerships are more common in teaching and nonprofit hospitals, and those using a value-based care model that ties payment to positive results for the community.
